The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS), NUS Faculty of Law and Thammasat University Faculty of Law are pleased to announce the Centre for Asian Legal Studies – Thammasat University Faculty of Law Peer Learning Initiative (“CATPLI”), a student-led project with the long-term goal of promoting direct knowledge exchange and academic collaboration between the students of both faculties.

CATPLI’s first workshop titled “An Introduction to the Basics of Singapore Contract Law”, seeks to introduce students of Thammasat University Faculty of Law to the basic principles of contract law in Singapore, while providing NUS Law students with a platform to consolidate their knowledge in this regard. In light of the structural differences between the civil law system of Thailand and the common law system of Singapore, participants of this workshop can expect a meaningful discussion of some of the doctrinal differences present in the contract laws of both jurisdictions, thereby fostering a deeper sense of appreciation for each jurisdiction’s approach to contract law, with the primary focus on Singapore contract law.

This workshop is an important milestone in CALS’ efforts to develop opportunities for the exchange of knowledge between law students from NUS Law and its partner institutions in the ASEAN region. Based on the success of this first workshop, it is foreseen that the project will evolve into a longer-term programme, with more workshops being conducted to cover other areas of Singapore law.

Thammasat University Law Dean, Professor Munin Pongsapan commends this initiative as being “This is a historic event – the first time that a course on Singaporean law is being offered to Thai law students. Indeed, it is a very appropriate topic, since Thai and Singaporean lawyers are very close to each other, professionally-speaking. This programme will be of great inspiration to Thai law students in their studies: a comparative approach always leads one to reconsider and re-examine one’s own law from a new perspective. I would like to offer my thanks to the NUS Faculty of Law for providing this opportunity to our students”.

There will be a total of seven online sessions in the inaugural workshop from 12 March 2022 to 23 April 2022.

These online sessions will cover:

  1. Introduction to the Singapore Legal System
  2. Formation of Contract
  3. Terms of Contract
  4. Breach of Contract & Remedies
  5. Frustration & Mistake
  6. Misrepresentation, Duress, Undue Influence & Unconscionability
  7. Practical Session

Registration for the first workshop will open to TU Law and other Thai law students (by invitation) from 20 January 2022.
